Un couple d’américains très élégants, le charismatique Chester MacFarland et sa jeune épouse Colette viennent d’arriver à Athènes. A l’Acropole ils font la rencontre de Rydal, un jeune guide touristique, américain mais parlant grec, arnaqueur de touristes à l’occasion. Séduit par la beauté de Colette et impressionné par l’argent et le raffinement de Chester, Rydal accepte sans hésiter leur invitation à dîner. Mais les Mc Farlands sont moins lisses qu’il n’y paraît. Dès son arrivée dans leur hôtel luxueux, Rydal est sommé par Chester de l’aider à déplacer le corps inanimé d’un homme, qui l’aurait soi-disant attaqué. Rydal accepte spontanément, mais les évènements s’enchaînent et il se retrouve vite entrainé dans un engrenage malsain, piégé. Son attirance de plus en plus grande pour la vulnérable Colette, qui y semble sensible, rend Chester fou de jalousie. La tension entre les deux hommes devient palpable, insoutenable. Leur voyage les entrainera de la Grèce à la Turquie, jusqu’à l’issue, terrible, dans le dédale d’allées du Grand Bazaar d’Istanbul.
